We have spotted the nutria fur trend some time ago and now Redbook International confirms that after some quiet years, nutria fur trend is back and on the rise.

Used by big names in the industry including Oscar de la Renta, Michael Kors, Patrik Ervell and Gilles Mendel, nutria is without doubt being embraced by the fashion industry.

The demand for this beautiful golden and chocolate brown fur is highly useful for the Gulf Coast region in U.S. where these beaver-like rodents are damaging the area’s delicate ecosystem. The Coastwide Nutria Control Program, run by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, is trying to manage the nutria population by paying $5 for each nutria tail turned into the program. So far, they not only succeeded to decrease the damage from 100,000 acres in 2001 to a little more than 8,000 but also enabled coastal trappers, many of them survivors of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, to make a living.
